COVID Lung Q&A

What is COVID lung?

COVID lung or COVID-19 lung is a condition in which COVID-19 causes lung damage. COVID-19 is a flu-like illness associated with congestion, a cough, fever, difficulty breathing, loss of taste and smell, and other unpleasant symptoms. It can be but is rarely fatal.

What are the risk factors for COVID lung?

COVID symptoms range from mild to severe or life-threatening. COVID-19 can lead to respiratory failure or multi-organ failure. If you have a lung condition like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or interstitial lung disease prior to developing COVID-19, your risk of COVID lung damage increases.

What are the symptoms of COVID lung?

COVID-19 can cause several lung problems, including COVID-19 pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis (infection), and superinfection. Superinfection is an additional infection that takes place during or immediately after an existing infection.

You might experience the following symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Low blood oxygen levels
  • Lung scarring
  • Organ damage

At the first sign of COVID lung, see Dr. Alim for an evaluation to reduce your risk of complications.

How does my doctor diagnose COVID lung damage?

To find out if you have COVID lung and develop a treatment, Dr. Alim reviews your medical history and symptoms. He completes a physical exam to assess your general health, and listens to your heartbeat and breathing.

He might recommend that you undergo lung function tests, blood tests, nasal or throat swabs, chest X-rays, or other imaging procedures to determine how severe your lung damage is.

What are my COVID lung treatment options?

Over time, your lungs can recover from COVID-19 with proper treatment, but it could take 3-12 months or longer to fully heal. Get plenty of rest, drink a lot of fluids, and avoid smoking.

You might take medications or dietary supplements, undergo convalescent plasma therapy or biological therapy, or use supplemental oxygen or mechanical ventilation to recover from COVID-19. Dr. Alim will monitor you during and after your recovery to assess your lung function and reduce your risk of developing further complications.

If you experience difficulty breathing or suspect you have COVID-19, call the office of Salman Alim, MD, today or schedule an appointment online.
